Discover the Charm of Yamagata – Human Shogi
Yamadera (Risshakuji Temple)
Officially known as Risshakuji, Yamadera is a sacred mountain temple with over a thousand years of history. The climb up its 1,015 stone steps is a spiritual journey in itself, surrounded by towering cedar trees, mossy stone lanterns, and ancient prayer halls. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of the valley below. Famed poet Matsuo Basho found inspiration here, penning one of his most well-known haiku. Yamadera is more than just a sightseeing spot—it’s a place to reflect, breathe, and reconnect.
Human Shogi (Tendo City)
Every spring in Tendo City, the birthplace of Japanese shogi piece production, the traditional game comes to life in a spectacular way. Human Shogi is a one-of-a-kind event where people dressed in full samurai armor act as the actual pieces in a giant outdoor shogi match. The game is directed by professional players, narrated for the audience, and set against the beautiful backdrop of Mount Maizuru’s cherry blossoms. It’s a thrilling fusion of culture, strategy, and performance that captivates both shogi fans and first-time visitors alike.
Ginzan Onsen
Ginzan Onsen is one of Japan’s most picturesque and romantic hot spring towns, tucked away in the mountains of Yamagata. Famous for its charming Taisho-era architecture, wooden ryokan inns line the riverbanks illuminated by gas lamps at dusk. In winter, the snow-covered rooftops and softly glowing lanterns create a dreamlike scene, drawing visitors from all over the world. It’s the perfect place to slow down, soak in a centuries-old bath, and step back in time.
Zao
Zao is a natural wonderland that offers thrilling experiences all year round. In the summer, it’s a haven for hikers with scenic mountain trails, vibrant wildflowers, and the stunning Okama Crater Lake—famous for its brilliant emerald-green water. When winter comes, Zao transforms into a magical snowy world known for its “Snow Monsters” (Juhyo): mysterious, snow-covered trees shaped by icy winds. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure or mystical scenery, Zao has something unforgettable for every season.
